Ethan Wang, age 10, a fifth-grader at Westmount Charter School, began piano lessons at four and has shown exceptional dedication to his musical development ever since. He currently studies privately with Professor Marilyn Engle in Calgary and has received recognition at both national and international levels.
In 2025, Ethan was awarded First Prize (Age Group III, 9–11) at the 2nd International Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Kronberg, Germany, and Second Prize (Age Group I, up to age 10) at the 32nd International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth in Szafarnia, Poland. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he also participated in international virtual competitions, earning the Absolute First Prize at the 3rd Great Piano Masters Competition (Spain) and the Gold Prize at the 4th Vienna International Music Competition. Nationally, Ethan won the Grand Prize in the 7–10 age group at the 2025 Canadian Music Competition (CMC) National Finals in Sherbrooke, Quebec. In the same year, he received Second Prize in the Junior Division (up to age 12) at the Canadian Chopin Competition in Toronto, held every five years, where he was also the youngest finalist at age nine. Ethan has earned numerous top prizes in regional and provincial competitions from an early age. At seven, he won First Place in the 13 & Under Piano Solo Class at the Canada West Performing Arts Festival and received the Overall Gold Prize at the Steinway & Sons Junior Competition.
He has been invited to perform at various festivals and concerts. His public debut featured a 25-minute solo program at the Rising Stars Concert at ArtsPlace Canmore. In 2024, he made his orchestral debut performing the first movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 11 with the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra. Ethan is scheduled to perform the complete Grieg Piano Concerto with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra on November 14, 2025 (Masterworks 2: Echoes from the Isles: Mendelssohn & Beach). He has also performed at the Calgary Performing Arts Festival Winner’s Concert (Bella Concert Hall) and the Calgary Contemporary Showcase Final Concert.
Ethan aspires to perform in concert halls around the world. Outside of music, he enjoys reading, coding, solving math problems, building historical scenes with mini-figures, and playing badminton.
